Why General Anxiety Disorder Is Notoriously Difficult To Treat
General anxiety disorder is a phenomenon which is hard to understand, because there is no specific or identifiable reason why someone should feel a sense of panic. It happens in the strangest of places, and it happens when nothing is apparently causing it. What is worse, the problem continues to affect the patient as time goes by, and the panic attacks can even worsen over time. As it is impossible to identify the root cause of the condition, many practitioners simply concentrate on symptom relief and making the patient more able to cope with daily life.
This condition has become far more prominent in recent years, which begs the question as to whether or not there are actually greater numbers of sufferers. It is more than likely that there are, although there are doubtless some people whose conditions would just have been ignored in the past. Panic and anxiety syndromes are among those conditions which were little understood by the medical profession, and which were treated with disdain by a general public which simply did not understand.
There is no doubt that the condition is genuine. The causes may be hard to determine, but the condition can be managed with the right regime. The first step is to cut out any pollutant or aggravating factor which could make the condition worse. Smoking affects the breathing, and is therefore a major aggravating factor. It is even possible that threats to the breath in childbirth are one of the factors which can cause anxiety in the first place. Alcohol can also cause mood swings and irritability, and can worsen the effects of any attack.
It is important to reduce the aggravating factors to a minimum before taking drug treatments, as this can reduce greatly the dose you will need. If a medical practitioner prescribes a drug for you, you can expect them to start with the smallest dose and work up as is necessary. Avoiding aggravating the condition can mean that you only need to take the minimum dose, which will reduce the effect of any potential side effects. These side effects are always present, which is why drug use should only be for the short term.
The fact that General Anxiety Disorder is hard to diagnose, and the causes hard to pinpoint, mean that it is a hard condition to heal. While it is often easy to remove some of the factors which can make the condition worse, actually returning the patient to full health is a different matter. It can only happen is a root cause can be found within the mind of the patient, and to this end some kind of therapy will be needed. The mind will need to relive the trauma which is causing the condition, and then release the trapped fear which is causing the General Anxiety Disorder.
