Why Generalized Anxiety Disorder Is Extremely Difficult To Cure

Generalized anxiety disorder is a condition which actually has no accurate definition. It is really a collection of symptoms which affect the body in a similar way. The phenomenon is strikingly similar to depression and phobias which prevent people from functioning in social situations, and the causes are probably identical. Many of these conditions have only been formally recognized in recent years, and previously people had to endure a lot of unfair treatment because other people thought they were malingering or feigning illness to get out of some duty or responsibility.

The instances of anxiety and panic attack disorders, and clinical depression, have increased greatly in recent years, even though the figures are artificially increased due the fact that many previous conditions were not recognized. The fundamental change in the way society is managed and run leads to higher levels of bodily stress, and these can trigger a panic attack in those with a dormant tendency. There are also more environmental pollutants which can trigger an attack, even though smoking is banned in many public places.

These conditions of panic attack tendency and anxiety are treatable by drugs, but only to the extent of relieving symptoms. There is no possibility of using drug treatments to eradicate the condition completely. The best which can be done is to manage anxiety in the short term, although it often takes weeks for drugs to begin to work. The drugs simply block the chemical pathways in the brain, and prevent the attack from occurring. This has no effect whatsoever on the underlying condition, and it does nothing to reduce the possibility of another attack occurring.

One of the most acute symptoms of such an attack is often shortness of breath, and this can give several clues as to how the condition develops and how it might be treated. The incidence of panic attacks among those who smoke is significantly higher, suggesting that anything which affects the breathing can trigger an attack. Interestingly, the same phenomenon occurs with relaxation exercises which are designed to manage the condition, proving that altered breathing of any kind helps the mind to access the emotionally charged memory.

Getting to the root cause of Generalized Anxiety Disorder is extremely difficult, as the fact that it is generalized would suggest. Because there is no obvious reason for the anxiety to occur, and because it occurs at completely unexpected times, it can be difficult to isolate the exact memories which are causing the problem. A program of counseling can try to get to any incidents which are still buried within the mind, and hypnotherapy can take you there much more quickly. You can also try behavioral therapy, which can help to condition different responses to the triggers of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
