How A Mental Breakdown Patient Can Be Nursed Back To Health
Mental breakdown, or nervous breakdown, is a condition which is well enough known, but which actually has no objective medical definition. Everyone knows that the mind is an instrument which can be overworked and put under too much pressure, even though it has remarkable powers of endurance. When this happens, symptoms will result. This type of breakdown is usually classified as being short term, as being the point at which the pressure builds up too far, and the patient is overwhelmed. Longer term chronic mental conditions are usually categorized in different ways.
The causes of a complete breakdown are usually a lot easier to define than those of depression or anxiety, and they are nearly always objective causes within the material world. The break up of a marriage or a long term relationship is still the most common cause of all, followed by extreme problems at the workplace or school. Worries over money, problems with children, and health issues are other common causative factors. Often, there will be more than one factor influencing the condition, such as when a marital break-up also affects the children.
As this condition is short term and extreme, the most important issue is to stabilize the patient. If there are any immediate physical signs that the body is becoming overwhelmed, they will need to be dealt with first. If blood pressure and breathing can be properly regulated, the possibility of an accompanying physical problem such as a heart attack decrease greatly. When the patient is out of immediate danger, the priority is to move them to an environment which will be calm, and which will contain nothing that can cause a relapse.
Once in this environment, the patient needs to built up to strength. It is important to make sure that the body takes in the right nutrients, as it will need to be restored from a weakened condition. If the patient is a smoker, this will not be the right time to quit as there are other more pressing matters. If the consumption of nicotine can be kept to a minimum, though, it will be beneficial. Drugs can be used if necessary, but be careful not to form bad habits and dependencies, as the body can easily associate feeling good with a drug and begin to demand it.
The mental breakdown patient can be restored to health by a constant program of doing the right thing. Build up the body with nutrition, make sure the patient gets a good balance of exercise and rest, as well as plenty of sunshine and outdoor activity. When they are ready, you can try to introduce other therapies which will need to be tailored to the needs of the patient. There are many therapies, both established and New Age, which can help someone recovering from a mental breakdown.
